How do big seo companies check the ranks

I keep hearing these days that rank in google/bing/... searches is not as important as before, but still a lot of people use it as a key metric in their SEO campaigns.

I have tried to create myself such a tool (for personal use and fun) to monitor my ranks. It seems Google and Bing are against using their APIs for SEO purposes, so I am wondering how big SEO companies like seomoz, raven tools, ... are doing the rank checking for so many people.
Even the popular FireFox extension Rank Checker must use some trick other than official APIs to check rankings.

Any ideas ?

I dis agree in this statement... Searches is very important. If your site is in the first page in Google lot of chances that you will get lot of unique visitor. We use the methods of SEO so that our site will be on the first page, our goal is to be on the first page.

 

What about my original question ? Do someone know how rank is checked/computed these days ?

 

Google provides its own toolbar that shows a page rank. Internally it uses Google’s API. It is protected, however if you are stubborn enough it is still possible to crack API calls and use it in your own application. And the other option: Google may not expose its API, but there are still may be exceptions for large SEO companies. It is all the matter of cost in the end.

 

There should be lots of Free Google SEO tools to check ranks.

Google never disclose its page rank algorithm so you must use the Google API.

I think the question here is how this companies, RankTracker, Ravens or Seomoz, SEScout and others similar ones check clients and suscriptors rankings...

I have to say, imo, although they provide valuable information, most of the time are not accurate, others check rankings weekly or daily, Ranktracker is to me the best one, while ravens hook up a few useful tools in the same interface

 

I browser rank checker tool is authorised from google.

 

At the end there is no way to get PR bypassing Google API. You will end up using it directly or indirectly anyway.

I did some more research on this topic and i'm beginning to think that all the big guys are actually scrapping Google results using lots of proxies.

Well, maximum free rank checker software or tools are not working properly. So, I must suggest you to use web CEO. This is paid software and working very well. You will not find any complain about this software.

 

We use Google search, bing search and yahoo search to know the rankings of my website keywords. And we do use google page rank checking tool (with google toolbar) to check the page rank of a website.
