Ecom sites can be optimized like any other site. But I will say this in general Google prefers info sites. That is just how they orginally designed their engine and have always stayed that way. They always thought that Ecom should be on Froogle or pay for ads.

It is difficult for a Ecom site to have as much content as an info site without seeming to have to much junk to its customers.

As ecommerce website don't generally have 300-600 word articles on them, how would you optimize a page for on-page SEO? Off page SEO isn't a problem as links can be directed towards any page using the variety of methods out there. I'm also in the process of setting up a ecom website with either magento or open cart, not decided which one yet.

3. An automated sitemap is a bonus
4. Pretty url's that include keywords in the URL are a bonus

That's all it takes for an ecommerce platform to be SEO friendly.
