    As it has being said above by previous posters, Google Analytic and Google Webmaster tools should always be your first choice.
    However, if you are asking about websites that you do not actually own i.e competitors website, I would recommend a combination of the following:

    semrush.com
    allwebsuite.com

    Bizinformation is a pretty good tool. This tool shows the user graphs of the unique visitor a site gets, and show how much it is worth. It also tells you how many submissions a site has in social network sites like Digg and Stumbleupon. I can't say i've personally used it, but there are some good reviews about it.
