I second that. It is free and it will give you the basic features all the paid software provides you :) Why spend all that money when you can get it for free and help support free software development in the process.... In this day and age, free is pretty good! :)

Besides vB (vBulletin), IPB (Invison Power Board) is a (paid) widely used script too.

Yeah, I can't see that happening.
If you're looking for a free forum, any of the free ones above will work with the addition of PHPBB3 which I haven't seen anyone mention yet.

Although it really is worth the money to invest in paid forum software.
They are the most neatly developed, easiest to modify, offer professional support, and are much more secure.
Not to mention the overall look and feel of them is much more professional.

    (I actually don't like phpBB)

There are man forum scripts like PHPBB,MYBB,SMF,V BULLETIN. PHPBB is a free forum software solution that can be used to stay in touch with a group of people or can power your entire website. With an containing database and hundreds of style and image packages to customise board you can create a very unique forum in minutes.

I recommend SMF (Simple Machines Forum) because it is free, fast, easy to use and quite easy to customise - definitely gets my vote!

I use vBulletin, xenForo, SMF & phpBB, for varying purposes and sites. I tend to use the free software to get a site established, and then once (IF) it begins to take root, it is a minimum of 6 months with building traffic before I consider moving to paid software. I prefer vB & xF over the free boards, but that's just me.

I switched from Vbulletin to SMF and have never been happyer,The mods are great, the support is supberb. Have been using SMF for 3 years now without a Spam problem at all, Have human Caphcha where you need to rotate pictures and a very simple mod, Add an avatar at the registration, Bots can't so the registration gets rejected, Great stuff all round and best of all its FREE

Anyways, I also agree with Xenforo being a really great software. Very intuitive and has many features that encourages user participation.

I suggest you to use MyBB or SMF. Both are user and admin friendly.
