Why aren't Bollywood Movies distributed internationally?

Discussion in 'Movies, Music & TV' started by sarahk, Dec 29, 2011.

If I check the listings for some of our local Independent cinemas I can go and see movies (with subtitles) from a wide variety of countries - but never any of the Bollywood movies that get talked about in this section of dp. They will be edgy, arty, critical successes and rarely a box office hit.

Surely if a movie is a local success it is worth distributing?
    What is holding them back?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I do know that if a Bollywood films generates enough interest, it is shown at select British cinemas.

Well this is the case for my local cinema, but as I said, I can only speak for myself :)

I have read Bollywood trade news that lists revenues from territories around the world. At least the most popular movies seem to be distributed globally. But I am sure there are many territories where Bollywood does not reach.

Bend it like Beckham is a good one to watch. In fact that is a mix of everything. Not sure if I would call it bollywood.

It was a great movie. But I classify it as a Brit film, not Bollywood. To see Bollywood, you need to see Don 2, Agneepath, Bodyguard, Singham, or something like that :)

Live in the US and I have never seen a "Bollywood" movie in my life. That's probably because we have Hollywood tho.

There are not movies like that because no one would be willing to screen them or distribute them if it means losing all their other business from Hollywood. This is after all a business, first and foremost. It is all about the money.

I hope it is for the best of everyone.. If bollywood movies are distributed internationally just imagine what kind of crap the world audience will have to go through... :D
On a serious note, it is all about commercial values. The big distribution houses of the world dont see any point in risking their investments. Especially if the competition is with the Hollywood cinema. The bollywood cinema is mostly famous at places with significant NRI or PIO population ... but on a world platform Indian cinema has a lot of catching up to do..

Eros International is by far the largest international distributor of Bollywood films. They have 100 agents and 2,000 shops. They also distribute Bollywood Films on satellite t.v.
The problem appears to be not distribution but popular acceptance. But with shows like "So You Think You Can Dance?" accenting Bollywood dances,John Q.Public in western Europe and North America, are beginning to show increased interest in these films.
It's up and away for Bollywood films in the future.
