One of the things not really mentioned is first to think about the niche you are thinking of going into. If I am correct you are jsut starting out...If so there a re lots ofniches you should really avoid, too much competition and lots of top affiliates using all forms of black hat SEO.

Personally I would suggest you start with something you have a great interest in thus know a lot about or at least are keen to learn more about yourself and thus can share your new found knowledge with others. But find out if that niche is not too competitive...

Then start indeed with what you think people would type in / what you type in to find out more about that niche...

Use Google keyword tool or others (good one that is free, without the competition module is Market Samurai - no better one on the market) I use the paid version myself. At least it allows you to find the right keywords to go after - you get all the free training inside, once a free member.

Then as you have not got competition data, I would look at what is ranking on page 1 for your found keywords sofar. If all authority sites (aged and high PR) then stay away from that. If you find some Web2.0 sites, like youtube vids, wordpress blogs etc look at how many backlinks they have (yahoo explorer), or better if using Firefox install the SEO Quake add-on which gives you most of the imporatnt competition info!

Your website should use the main keyword (theme keyword for homepage - generally higher competition and higher traffic levels), then the related keywords you use as the categories and firts off all yopu need then to find 'long-tail keywords' which you will write articles about for your site...those keywords you wil ltry and rank first. Once you rank for those then it becomes easier to rank for your category page keywords and the homepage keyword(s)...

Long tail you can rank for in short term when chosen well, the category keywords and homepage keywords are more mid term to long term.
