    Neither will help with designing.

Both are excellent for generating html though

Often it comes down to the editing tool or IDE which helps you develop your scripts and the amount of online assistance. Back in the old days ASP forums and code libraries were all paid subscription based where PHP was free. Might have moved on since then though.

I guess it comes down to what you already know and how sophisticated a system you plan to develop.

Asp.net produces crap for html. It's years behind all others and targets IE only (despite what Microsoft might say).

According to my experience go for php its better than asp . In asp it is like html but has scripting language like vb,java, python etc. So instead of learning all the scripting just learn php, its very simple to understand and has lot of method to call a function. But its what gunnamanil its also depends upon your requirement for the project or your interest .

ASP.NET is superior in my opinion- especially Visual Studio IDE. But it comes at a cost. The IDE and SQL server licenses cost a ton. If I were on a serious budget, I'd definitely go with PHP MySQL.

    Actually not.
Both are Server site scripts which generate the HTML output to the web user. Hence you might consider them for the Server side scripting. And server side scripting doesn't relate with designing.

PHP all the way. It's arguably the easiest to learn of the two.

Hi, I have years of experience in .net programming and launched quite a number of web sites. Just for curiosity I tried a PHP recently and was really surprised. Among PHP benefits are: cheaper hosting, free instruments and tons of tutorials and samples. But most of all I like a full control over resulting HTML and total absence of IDE “magic” with auto-generated filed. My first and only PHP website is dinobrowser.com, but not for long ;)
