What are your thoughts of eCommerce for WordPress. It's good in my opinion as it can be added to other web pages, forums, blogs etc..

    Your opinions?

Many friend of mine use wordpress as ecommerce sites.Wordpress is some kind of white toast today. Can make different kind of sandwichs by many webmasters.

Wordpress is indeed easy and effective.

But, when I see all of the other IMers using something, I tend to head in the opposite direction.

My issue is how big a target WordPress has on it's back, as an eCommerce website. I had been using WP with PremiumPress cart system, but got blasted with that timthumb breach a few months ago. Since then I've been looking into a better cart solution and possibly just having a blog in a subfolder of my site. OpenCart seems to have won out on what I'm looking for, as far as being lite, functional, and modifiable...and free.

Well, wordpress is pretty good for ecommerce websites. You can get so many plugins to make your store flexible.

The only disadvantage, that I can see is, it can’t be used for sites with a lot of sales due to heaviness of database queries.

To quite honest, wordpress is core foundation is content management and not ecommerce. It may do a good enough job, but if we're talking about a full blown, 10000 product website, then I wouldn't use wordpress and go with the likes of Magento or OpenCart.

I agree with DollarTycoon, it all depends on how much you plan on selling. I use Magento for my site, which works great for selling alot of products. However, Wordpress may be okay for a very small initial startup ecommerce site.
