To or Not to Consolidate SEO

If I were building a site, say selling sports paraphernalia, and imagine there are only two teams in the NFL, the 49ers and the Jets. They are totally opposite in location and league, but they are in the Super Bowl fighting to win. I want to sell all apparel, cups, stickers, whatever, that can have their logos and pictures on them.

After putting up a nice site, or before, if I decide to make a 2nd or 3rd site to drive traffic to that first site with tons of content on the Jets/49ers, etc., I need to know.... is it better to create just one outside site with BOTH the 49ers and Jets info in that one, or make 2 separate web sites, one for each, and drive each one to the main sales site? Assume I will produce enough content for both even if I made 2 separate sites.

And if you think it is 2 sites, then are there advantages to making that 4, or 6, or 10? I know after a certain # it becomes negative, especially if all the domains are very new, but I need to know the limits of this method, if viable.

    Thanks!

If I were you, I'll stick with one website with a condition, the domain name must be general (must not have 49ers or other team's name). It's hard enough to promote 1 website, but to promote 10 would crazy. You don't see website like Amazon, eBay create 10 website for each niche. Not only you'll be splitting your effort but it also will bring headache to manage all 10 websites.

I would also suggest a consolidated website where you can add various teams and their merchandise. The main benefit will be your overall marketing effort will be focused on just one main website and will not be distributed. I think you are looking at something like soccerbox(dot)com

I am not talking about making 10 retail sites... there will be only ONE RETAIL site... the other 2 would be like fanboy sites of each team that will point to the retail site... so the Jets site would be like a Jets fanboy site, all info, news, quips, schedule, nicknames, think ESPN Jets page... still no? YOu mean just put all that fan info in the retail site that has nothing to do with the retail products?

This is all under the premise that I will be spending a lot of time creating content. If the answer is still no, is there ANY reason I should create a feeder site(s) to create more traffic to the retail?
