Sites that have pagerank with no backlinks.

    I have been looking to buy a few domains with pr lately. However everything I find has pagerank, but no backlinks. Searching in the classifieds here and justdropped.com How is this possible? Does this mean that these sites will lose the rank on next update?

    My though is that the seller might own a high ranking domain and is 301 redirecting to the for sale domain

    Correct,sites with no backlinks but are ranking are just 301 redirecting to other sites.
    Thats the mistake most people make when registering old domain.Thinking they lost their ranks after buying a ranking domain.
    Before registering,you need to dig up much info about the said domain.
    wayback machine,cache,info,backlinks and others.
    And even if the backlinks exist and you dnt retore or redirect pages,you will surely loose the rank.
    It is a real big deal in trying to retain old ranks.It involves a lot.

    This is the right one. 301 redirection would be okay for solving your problem You may definitley approach for this one.
