What is the best linking startegy for SEO

My own experience with an active search engine optimisation strategy for my web design company wesite, I have learnt that the benefots of article marketing, press releases and participation in forums and blogs are limited and quite short term. Whilst I have seen a significant increase in the number of back links to my website by following the above key link building practices,I have also observed that the benefits in icreased traffic as a result tend to be short lived. Its all OK in the short terms as benfits can be seen quickly and there is resulting increasein traffic to website and search engine ranking on Gogole and other search engines.

However whenever I stop press re;eases and prarticipation in forums and blogs for 2 or 3 weeks even, the traffic level seems to drop faster than it has risen in the first place. What then is the best link building strategy in the long run when you want the search engine strategy to go to the next level i.e increase traffic and ranking further. More importantly how can one spend this time in order to achieve long term benefits. Surely if the traffic falls so quickly after one has stopped press release, article distribution and particpation in social media site; it cannot be the best utilisation of time.

Maybe someone can share their experience here. What I have stopped doing as aprt of my search engine marketing and link building strategy is exchanging links mutually with other sites. I had found this to be quite time consuming in the begining and had started to use other link building methods mentioned earlier instead.

"article marketing, press releases and participation in forums and blogs are limited and quite short term" i think that he has already mentioned these as strategies....
Post, ping, create backlink-just make it a routine, develop a network of sorts on other IP's, different free hosts etc...use whatever tools you have to, if it is BH, GH, WH whatever, the people that you are competing with at the very least have these types of things automated and a lot of the DP members just don't understand the complexity and diversity of their automation.
    Good Luck

(Relevant) Link exchanges generally provide better traffic in the long term IMHO than social bookmarking and all that.

Consider sponsoring any kind of contests, themes, tools as well as some 'non for profit' companies starting from $1 then you latest option is to try blog reviews, and paid links site wide from relevant websites..
But in my opinion the best way to get backlinks is to have a great content website so people will link to it normally ;)

Refresh the contents in your page frequently and submit your contents to high traffic article directories like ezine and get your niche related backlinks. Along with this, on page seo optimization will help improve your traffic.

Blog commenting is getting harder everyday. All blogs converting their links to nofollow. Having stable links from high pageranked pages helps me a lot. Will your links stay in the same page forever or will it fall to sub pages. Thats an importing point for me. You can check the link in my signature. That's my own method to increase stable backilinks to your site and it helped me a lot

I personally think its something you should never stop doing. Obviously getting links from high PR and other authority sites in or related to your niche would help a lot more than just general low PR links obviously.

Try to get links from variety of IP's from all over the world with varying anchor texts (emphasizing your main keywords). build both nofollow and dofollow kind of links. Try to diversify the link portfolio. Article directory submission, web directory submission, blog directory submission, forum signature links, rss feed submission, social sites, editorial links from web2.0 properties and links from other relevant web masters etc. should be your link sources.

I agree that article promotion is pretty good for long term survival in the search engines, as post Panda article directories is still a safe bet
