Please help me understand about keywords. I know what they are but how do they really help you? Why do you really need them.

I want to know how many you should have as well. Does it make a difference if you only have one or two or would it be better to have many? Or is there a limit as to how many you can have? I honestly do not know and am trying to figure this all out as I am very interested in the whole SEO process. Much thanks to you.

Keyword research is the cornerstone of the seo. Do not use many keywords, you should find those, which are more appropriate to your content. Write naturally, to your visitors.
I can suggest you to make keyword research with semrush, you should define your main keyword and type it in semrush. It will show you many queries, choose keyword with high search volume and low competition.
