Get a tool like Seo quake for example, sort the backlinks by PR and get the best one you can find, ussually they will be PR>3

You can create quality backlinks from Directory submission, Article Submission, Blog Submission, Blog Commenting, Social Bookmarking, Forum participation. Creation of the link wheel is also very helpful.

Use software to put it on auto but I will prefer manaual backlinking through blog commenting and forum posting

I would just like to add to the ideas above - Make sure you are linking to sites that are relevant to your website. This is what Google looks at most importantly. If you have a weight loss site, then do inbound and outbound linking to weight loss related sites. In this way you have the quality not the quantity.
