    A common mistake I've seen is people only building links to the homepage for the same exact keyword phrase and not mixing in branded terms, KW variations or pointing external links to subpages.

    Speaking of keyword research, a lot of beginners make the mistake of using the Google Adwords tool and not selecting "exact" instead of "broad" to get an accurate list.

    never attempt to spam the index - google will pick it up - if your site is good and you have good conent you will get good traffic
