Is there a relation between HTML and Hotmail?

Maybe it is a really dumb thing to ask and maybe there´s a more suitable forum for that kind of question but I couldn´t find it (here in DP) so I´m asking here.Is there a relation between HTML and Hotmail? I´m asking just because the words sound similar, yes, that´s the only basis for my comparison. So, is it just a coincidence or everybody here but me knows the relation between the two?

html is the "language" used to instruct web browsers on what they should be showing the user (along with javascript and css)
hotmail will use html (javascript and css) to construct it's pages

I'd be hugely surprised if they chose the name because of the spoken similarity to html given that their target market are regular people who have probably never heard of html. There may, ofcourse, have been a subliminal word association which made them choose that name over the others they would have been considering.

I know what HTML stands for dude... I asked because maybe the Hotmail creators came up with a catchy name inspired in the acronym of the language used to create the program. There is no need for the regular people to understand the inspiration behind a brandname, be it Procter and Gamble, Volkswagen or Hotmail. And as for a possible relation, it has happened before, it´s not a far fetched idea.

The only connection between HTML and HoTMaiL is that Hotmail PROBABLY used the HTML acronym as a pun basis for the Hotmail name.

There is nothing related to hotmail and HTML. As one is a programming language and the other is an email platform.

Founder Jack Smith gоt the idea of accessing e-mail vіa the web frоm a computer anуwhere іn thе world. When Sabeer Bhatia cаmе uр with the business plan for the mail service, he trіed all kinds of names ending in 'mail' аnd finally settled fоr hotmail аѕ it included thе letters "html" - the programming language uѕed to write web pages. It waѕ initially referred to аs HoTMaiL with selective uppercasing.....

To be clear, we've been able to do that since ARPANet in the 60s or 70s and he did not come up with that idea.

I was speaking about web-based email, sorry if it wasn't clear. You can see more details on his Wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Smith_(Hotmail)

Interesting, except that the source cited on Wiki does not actually say that. It does not say they selected for hotmail because it included those letters as you imply above, merely that they capitalized them in the name

    http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...ve/2010/01/06/a-short-history-of-hotmail.aspx

Maybe I am too literal, but that does not suggest the name was picked for that reason. Maybe it was, but that is not what the article says. It just says they capitalized those letters in the name for that reason, not that the name was chosen because it has those letters. Hey maybe it was.... I take back my it was far-fetched, because maybe that is why they did it. I still doubt it, but I would take back my first post. :)

well, this is perhaps the stupidest question i have ever seen. But hey, to someone whose new to web design and stuff, it is a plausible mistake :p

Nah, i doubt there is any link at all between HTML and hotmail.

HTML is Hyper Text Mark-up Language.

Hotmail is a email provider. Although.. Hotmails website is coded in HTML, well, its base is ( i thinksz?)
