As my point of view php and .net are both a good platform for your web site. but there are some advantage of having php because the page is generated dynamic so any change can be done by the admin and also it is an open source language so easily available or can be download easily. and .net is not open source language.

PHP is the best and easy to use. Lot of popular scripts for ecommerce made by PHP only.

go with magento - prebuilt cms - don't try to build something from scratch unless you are doing it for learning

Definitely php, there are many more developers for lower cost, and more free extensions etc available and the hosting will cost much less.

Are you really sure you want to develop your own though? This is a huge field with thousands of companies already out there doing this? If you are trying to make a go of this as a business I really recommend that you look into it more, you will have a tough time as a new ecommerce software company with so many already established. If you just want to run an online store definitely go with a pre-built software over making your own.

well PHP is not really the best but its okay for simple jobs which will be the case in most scenarios. with PHP you will get tons of free CMS and cheap hosting. With java these things are hard but it is meant to handle bigger and more flexible apps.
