How would you market an online game?

    Hi there,

I run a text based browser game and feel that there is a decent amount of functionality to begin marketing it. I have not advertised the game or invested in any marketing. The game currently has ~20 players and I aim to have 100 very soon.

If you're interested, the site in question is: civsonline com

How would you market with this particular subject?

Have you tried posting on various sim-game websites? OnRPG.com have a pretty active forum where members are always looking out for new games.

I'd join forums, groups, social networks, etc. related to the gamer niche. And try to get the word out that way. Also focus on basic SEO to help drive organic traffic to your site.

    Good luck. :)

These days games are all about the social element. Is there anyway you could create a facebook version? That way promoting it is all done by the users.

You could join other blogs that are about games, and leave comments on them with a link back to your game site, ensure that the comments adds value or else they might be removed by the admin

Thanks Mr Right. Currently I'm trying to develop some low cost (aren't we all? :)) marketing methods, similar to grass-roots marketing with viral, abstract and guerilla efforts.

Youtube would be a good outlet for this.
