Install something like Google Analytics and it gives you the data in a presentable form.

Try to do some good SEO for the site, like change the title and description to be more relevant to the page content. Add some contents on the page that tempts the visitor to click to other page of the site. As long as they continue to visit more than 1 page of your site, bounce rate would be low.

    What is the site?

Have you asked for reveiws from other webmasters on here?
Have you used something like this site? http://www.usertesting.com
Have you checked what keywords people use to find your site and made sure that you have good quality relevant content/service/products?

I've seen a lot of people ask/answer this so I figure I'd clear the air.

Your bounce rate is like saying "how many people came to your site and immediately left without doing anything else."

It's a measure of two things, on one end, it's a time stamp between pages. Most web analytics tools calculate engagement metrics like "time on site" or "pages per visit" by being able to cross reference information from one page to another. The tool can't calculate many of the standard metrics without you visiting another page AFTER you've first landed on the domain, e.g. the first page you visited.

Second, there is a time associated with the cookie - so if I visited a site, and didn't do ANYTHING for 30 minutes (or however long the cookie expires for a web session/visit) and then I visited or clicked on another page, I'd still be a bounce because the cookie expired before I did anything.

My bounce rate is .28%. I have a Pet Services website that I just put up in January. Is that good or bad?

Of course, pet services website is just like adult website attracting people from all walks of life and adaptable for all ages. 28% bounce rate should be good...

I didnt get you piper. Despite having 5 years experience You could not understand the meaning of bounce rate. It is just a metric to get only approximate value of your particular page and not more than it. I hope google does not count it in ranking a website/page.
It also has some drawbacks like, If I come to your informative website to learn about the quality of shoes, I get it in your page and don't need to view anymore page, Bounce rate will still show you that I am your bounced visitor while your website/page has achieved it's optimum level therefore take it only as an approximate value of your page and not more than it.

    hi ,
it totally depends on your site but yes in my opinion its really high it should be less.To reduce bounce rate the content and look of yosite should be good so that the visitors should ge attracted towards it.

I also suggest that you run Google analytics on your site. It will allow you to see some details that might lead to be able to better analyze your bounce rate.

78% is way too high. You should be aiming for 50%. By the way can anyone recommend this book "Outsmarting Google: SEO Secrets to Winning New Business" at www.books-for-everyone.com
