If you are starting a new site, then it is better to go with latest version of Joomla, for now it's joomla 1.7. But you won't be able to use all the popular extensions because they are not available for joomla 1.7 but are available for joomla 1.5... So, it's better to check the availability of extensions that you might need for your site. Of course, if you can wait for extensions to be upgraded to Joomla 1.7, you can go with it.

Very effective discussion. I was to choose 1.7. But after this thread I think For general clients 1.5. For me 1.7 and For some advanced clients 1.6

Yeah this thread has definitely helped me make a decision onto which version I should use for certain clients. I find 1.5 very easy to use and my clients ge a hang of it pretty quickly. I just started messing with 1.7 since this thread and I am finding it very more developed!

    Thanks, you too!

Consider using wordpress. I use that pretty well for all my clients. I only about five in Joomla.....

I find wordpress is way easier to use and customize.

The only thing that annoying me to use joomla 1.6 is because of its incompatibility with virtuemart. And there is still no news of when they will release virtuemart for joomla 1.6 :(

That's my biggest issue with all CMS updates. All the plugins stop working because the plugin creators can't keep up. It actually drive me nuts when I upgrade and half my extensions, plugins, widgets or what have you are no longer working. That's why I backup everything now when I update or do I dry run of it on a dummy site.

    Cheers!

    +1

PS: You can optimize the speed with caching techniques.
Joomla also consumes less server resources than wordpress (for huge sites).
