Optimize every PAGE. Keywords for every page, do inner linking of your site as 1page to the 2nd and to the 3d. Define your unique field and find friendly sights, forums and catalogues.
    For the beginning.

As Install said optimize every page with keywords, but to be specific to your question the basic and most important in SEO is Keyword Research, which many fail to do. Only after proper keyword research go for on-page optimization and optimize each page with two or three keywords not more than that, once you get enough traffic then you can experiment with other keywords.

Following are the on page optimization you should follow
    Keyword Research
    Title tag
    Meta Description, Keyword
    H1 tag,
    Image name, Alt text
    Links
    Unique content

All of the aforementioned should be built around the keyword for which you want to rank. I hope it helps you a lot

Sohan Singh i read your comments "Before all these above steps set up Google webmaster and analytic, yahoo site explorer, and bing webmaster tool". There is no point in creating these accounts until you are up and running with your website. I'm not saying one shouldn't create it, but it should be done only after you are ready to launch your website.

On page optimization is one of the very first step of SEO which every webmaster should look into. It probably won’t even take you an hour to learn and implement some of these on-page optimization techniques. On-page optimization involves modifying keyword frequency in the URL, Title, Headings, Hypertext Links and Body text

To 'optimize' a website means to build it so that it will be discovered by search engines, and to design each page in such a way that the site’s contents will be thoroughly mapped and indexed to keywords that potential customers employ when seeking your products or services.

Hello, if you want to optimize onpage very thoroughly, you should know that before doing this process you need to get information about the level of your competition. Icecube_media also have to write the same opinion. The next step will set and using keywords with the help of seo techniques, make meta tags accordingly to your site.

It's pretty simple, but tedious if you haven't been doing it from the start. You need to check your HTML tags first of all. Make sure they contain your keywords, but don't stuff. Then move to the body and calculate your % keyword density. Should be between 2-5%. Don't go too high, or Google might punish you.

Don't ever put in keywords that are not relevant to your site's niche. That is, don't use words like "iPod" over and over again if your site is about the oil industry. Get it? Google will punish you big-time. That's not to say you can't write an article about the ipod, but it had better relate to the oil industry in some way.
