1. Firstly, you need to understant what is search engine and how it works.
2. Understant what is a keyword and why the keyword analisis is important for your blog
3. Brainstorming and write down keywords related to the topic of your blog. Use Google's Keyword tool or other free tools in the web
4. Try not to use only keywords based on the number of Google's Monthly Searches but...
5. Choose your keywords based on relevancy and competition

To find the competition just write on google your keyword in quotes and see the number of sites that use this keyword. This number shows you if the keyword is high competing or not.
To optimize your keywords try to you use long tail keywords. For ex. let's say your blog is about roses. Write a high quality article for "tips for growing red roses". "growing red roses" could be your keyword and not just "roses" because the last one is very general!
