    There are two types of backlinks

    1. Nofollow Backlinks - It brings traffic only but it will not help to google page rank & SERP .

    2. Dofollow Backlinks - It will help to bring traffic, google page rank & SERP (get high quality backlings)

    Backlinks are considered as one of the vital factors in ranking a site. Though you will notice sometimes that there are sites having a very low number of backlinks or sometimes not having even a single backlink that still rank high in SERP, this doesn't mean that backlinks are taken for granted. Quality backlinks should not be ignored because they can help you boost your ranking in SERP.

    The more backlinks you have, the higher your SERPs will be. A link from a higher PR (3 or 4) site will push your SERPs better than one from a PR1 or 2. Plus your own page rank is determined by backlinks.

    You can kind of compare it with the popular kid in the school that everybody want to hang out with and the non popular kid that no body wants to hang out. The more popular your site is in form of Backlinks, the more Google likes you.
