Does anybody know if Google uses your bounce rate data for ranking your website in the SERPS?

Google has the capability to measure bounce rate data. It is a question of whether it uses that information in its ranking algorithm. Depending where you are in the World, and what market category, average bounce rate is about 45%. If you are above this you may need to take some action. If you're below 40% I wouldn't worry too much.

You have correctly noted. High bounce rate will hamper the SERP as well as the PR.

There really aren't any written rules about bounce rates - it all depends on what your website does. Generally speaking, if you are an informational website, your bounce rate should be low. But if you are a transactional website, it is perhaps ok to have a higher bounce rate.

    Cheers

Search engines have been using bounce rates to as a signal of page quality since the days of Lycos. Google certainly also learns from it.

What an acceptable bounce rate is, depends on your niche. Also tail terms that are harder for Google to find relevant content for tend to have higher bounces.

Bounce rate is taken into consideration along with hundreds of other factors, but a low bounce rate alone won't be the reason for low rankings. If you have the answer to a query on a page of your site, users will get the information they want and bounce off - but does this make you irrelevant? Of course not.

Don't think of SEO in terms of one factor - a high bounce rate will not harm you when mixed with a range of better ranking signals.
