From wikipedia. This is a technique to avoid duplicate content as the search engine does not like duplicated content.
Article spinning is an effective way to increase affiliate sales also..For example if i own a unique article it is illegal for me to submit it to many article directories if i spin it again and again search engines will not recognize it as duplicate content and this help to get more backlinks and hence more sales also..
Yes, rewriting. There are some programs that can do that for you. I believe that the best ones use synonyms to rewrite your article. This is a great way to quick lift up your page rank (if you do also some oneway link exchange), but be VERY careful, don't over do articles spinning, the result is generally illisible and can damage you business/website reputation on the net.
Article spinning is one type of way of creating many article from one article. It is method of rewriting the content of original article produce the multiple article. Some article spinning work by grabbing content from various other site on the web and also replacing part of your article with it.
Article spinning involves spinning of an originally written content with the help of any online software so that same cannot be traced by Google for a duplicate content. The best example is free article spinner website. There you can learn the rest.

Article spinning in a simple point of view is just rewriting an article. But mostly, we call it spinning because we use some tools to spin articles which is more likely the same with rewriting.
In my experience, article spinning it totally useless. All article spinners spin an article into complete nonsense that's unreadable. I'd rather pay someone to rewrite articles for me if I need to. I found article rewrites for as low as $3 per article, and they are in much better quality than anything article spinners can come up with.
Article spinning is, as many others have said, a way to produce many (slightly) different versions of an article. You take the first sentence and re-write it 3 or 4 times. Then the next sentence. Then the next... When you have rewritten the last sentence of the article you press the 'spin' button and the program randomly picks, say, version 1 of sentence 1 with version 3 of sentence 2, and so on. This produces an article that is sufficiently different that the search engines will regard it as being unique. If you press the 'spin' button again the program will produce another unique article. Spinning is very, very tedious. Because of that, most 'spinners' do not do the job properly. The result is usually unreadable to the human eye. What's the point of all this? The advantage is that you can submit all these 'unique' articles for syndication in the various article directories, and get backlinks from them. However, most if not all of these backlinks will be 0 and will be detected by the search engines as what they are - totally bogus. So the disadvantage is that spinning is largely a complete waste of time. Oh, and it can cost as much as $60 per month or more!
Yup, I definitely agree that this is a useless and time consuming way of building links. I currently using one of these spinning programs that automatically submitted spun versions to different article directories and blog sites. But sad to say that only few were been indexed by Google and mostly submitted to low PR blog sites.
Article spinning is where you rewrite any word through changing synonyms and placed it with spin syntax. Ex. You must {bring|deliver} the project to me {within|in} 24 {hours|hrs}.

Article spinning is a search engine optimization technique by which blog or website owners post a unique version of relevant content on their sites. It works by rewriting existing articles, or parts of articles, and replacing elements to provide a slightly different perspective on the topic. Many article marketers believe that article spinning helps avoid the feared penalties in the Search Engine Results pages (SERP) for using duplicate content. If the original articles are plagiarized from other websites or if the original article was used without the copyright owner's permission, such copyright infringements may result in the writer facing a legal challenge, while writers producing multiple versions of their own original writing need not worry about such things.
