I'd have to disagree with most of the comments so far (although several people pointed out the limited value of signature links)...

Forum sigs have VERY LITTLE VALUE in terms of SEO. Google (and other major search engines) provide almost no "link juice" to signature links at all. I'd venture to say they have no value in terms of SEO, unless the forum is highly related to your niche. Keep in mind, many forum links include "nofollow" tags as well, which completely negates the limited value the links might have had...

What signature links can do, is build up your reputation within your niche and possibly drive a small amount of traffic to your website. Otherwise, don't waste a ton of time with forums...

 

I'll take a different approach:
Forum posting, effectively. is all about contributing and adding value to the conversation.
What goes around comes around. If you really care, it will come back in ways unknown to you.
"More for all" mentality includes more for you as well.
It's a win-win combination.

Forum profile links are useless for SEO in my opinion. On the other hand, real interaction on forums where your comments provide value can be beneficial. Many internal pages on forums and groups have some page rank. It is important to try to get your comment on the first page of the topic string, as the page rank will not follow to the subsequent pages. You must check for "nofollow' as well, although it is wise to have a blend of regular and "nofollow' links in your link profile.

 

I've never seen a huge impact on having lots of forum post backlinks (maybe I'm doing it wrong?). However I have found it useful for getting new sites indexed (especially on high PR sites).
