The more content your homepage has, the better! But just make sure that those articles are well-written and not a duplicate one.

No, i, personally, am not in favor of putting a whole lot of content on home page. Though text has less effect on page load speed but it will give your page a huge scroll. and i think people don't keep reading a long article untill it is exceptionally interesting/informative. rather they would like the information to be presented in small pieces. I, therefore, would like to keep my home-page content under 300 words, enough to accommodate my targeted keywords, interesting enough to make my visitors interact with my website. It should be able to explain my business. Instead of putting all the content on homepage only, i would like to create separate pages, each targeting 2-3 keywords. That way i could target my keywords in a better and easy way.
Contents are the KING of any website. But major factor are in content should be quality and user informatics. Always keep in mind when any article for web page content are keyword density should be 3-4%, always check keyword prominence and keywords proximity.

putting lot of content is good but should be done properly. when you put content , make sure you categorize it well. also use javascript/jquery kind of tabs to show content in tabs. if you have tabs, you can show content requested by user and search engine will see whole lot of content. so user and search engine both will be ok with that.
Content with bunches of crappy contents make no sense. If you want to benefit from contents, make them with high quality.
