Should I use Wordpress or...?

Discussion in 'WordPress' started by Computerized, Oct 28, 2006.

I'm planning on starting an SAT website, but I'm not sure how I should go about doing it. Should I use Wordpress, or use a template, something like this: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/prep_one/prep_one.html ?

I'm leaning towards having a template rather than using Wordpress, but would that make things a lot harder? Any other suggestions as to what I should do?

With that much content, I would go with Joomla. Would make it MUCH easier to keep track of it all. Wordpress is great, but more for blogs. Good luck.

Wordpress can do a job like this but you will have to modify the templates. If it doesn't work for you I would suggest Drupal. Stay away from Joomla at all costs.

Why do you not like joomla? Wordpress could work, but I think a CMS is better suited (than blogging software).

Please explain why you recommend someone stay away from Joomla at all costs? Joomla + Mambo returns over 100,000,000 combined results in google. I don't think a piece of software that "sucks" would return anything near that many results. Do you have any experience with Joomla? I understand there are some better CMS's out there, but none of them are free and most enterprise solutions cost around $10,000.

In my opinion, Joomla is perfect for what you are wanting to do. I have built TONS of powerful Joomla sites that go outside the box. The great thing about Joomla is it is so easy to create your template, and then integrate only the parts of Joomla you want, unlike some other CMS's.

I love wordpress, but the problem there is that wordpress is blogging software. Your trying to develop a portal. If you don't think Joomla is the right CMS for you, check out www.opensourcecms.com

This is possibly one of the most misleading posts I've seen in a long time on this forum

there is no reason whatsoever to stay away from Joomla

Security is an important issue for CMS apps nowadays. Wordpress and Joomla seem to get better marks than Mambo or Drupal on this point.

wordpress is mainly for blogging sp if you plan to have much content then i will suggest you to move to a CMS - use joomla or drupal - which ever you find more easy to deal with ...ill prefer drupal .

As Joomla! has components for blogging, mention Joomblog.

Well in one short sentence: Its BFU (big, fat and ugly). Really.

I currently have a site running on Joomla and I regret having used Joomla for it. There are a lot of problems with Joomla. Its bloated, it loads real slow and it works funny on some browsers (its WYSIWGY is totally useless on IE, for example). Granted, it has a lot of lovey-dovey icons on its control panel and what-not but I find that Wordpress can do an equal, if not better job than Joomla, with the suitable plugins that you require for it to do. Wordpress is a blogging platform, true, but I have seen it work as a CMS before on some sites and I would say it does a hell lot of a better job than Joomla.

    just plain sucks for what???

You haven't substantiated your comments in any way whatsoever, they're just pure opinion

I've used Joomla for a number of sites, and I find it to be an excellent CMS for what it's intended for

No, there is no specific reason to stay away. It entirely depends on your site needs. If it doesn't make sense to use Joomla based on the planned functionality or architecture of your site, then stay away from it, simple as that
