If you really want to quit, you just have to replace the satisfaction of smoking with some other small pleasure. Like overeating, or stabbing a voodoo doll.

Or you can do like I did, and get pregnant. Fags and morning sickness just don't seem to mix. That will soon cure you of your expensive and debilitating habit.

I remember Aston Kutcher on Leno talking about this book he read to stop smoking. It was interesting because throughout the book the author told the reader when to light up and smoke, then by the end he told the reader to light up for the last time, and it worked.

The author must really know his psychology...

Obelia: Being a male character, I don't know how to get pregnant.
    guy123: That sounds awesome.

Right now I'm holding my wait time at an hour until I feel like bumping it up another 5 minutes (it's been a difficult day for cutting down). I feel weird and I can already tell the healing process to my throat and lungs will be long and uncomfortable. I've stopped smoking twice before and started again after a week or less both times. I'm hoping this time I will be able to look at how many hours I'm waiting between each cigarette and be inspired by that. I don't expect to stop completely for a whole year.

If you wanna quit it then just quit it.
do it at once, that wait thing won't do.

Good luck. I'm actually trying to quit smoking as well, so I can empathize with what you are going through.

I like to try to remember what it was like to be productive without smoking... seven years ago and quite unlike now. Cigarettes have become such a big part of who I am and it's especially unfortunate that I started having to deal with adult responsibilities about the same time I think I became addicted.

About quitting cold-turkey... I've been told since my cold-turkey attempts that it's a bad idea and you should get a "quit date" into your head far in advance. However I think it applies differently to certain cases.

I see why you're having a problem giving up smoking - your code is shit.

You've defined $wait as a static variable, but then you're trying to modify it.

No wonder you can't quit smoking!

It's not easy, and no matter how much you dance around it, it won't get any easier. I tried to quit many many times, and finally did it in 2001. I just made a snap decision one night, and it stuck.

Smoking is enjoyable. And I miss it. But the side effects just aren't worth it. The things you'll gain from quitting are way more important than what you'll miss. And eventually (like after a year or so), you'll start feeling like a kid again, and get your energy back and start living a real life. That includes getting that crazy productivity hype that long nights and cigarettes can bring on.

I can smell rain before it starts.
    Coffee tastes better.
I can drink way more alcohol without feeling terrible the next day.
I can ride a bike really fkn fast.
I have about 1 extra hour a day.
    Cheap food tastes real good.
    I don't stink.

Indeed you can achieve a lot of things by quitting smoking, the sense of humor is not one of them.

 Sorry. I was only trying to help.
Try having a friend or close relative die from lung or throat cancer, it's side splitting.

    Any bloody excuse.

Check out Steve Pavlina's website: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/category/motivation/

It's not specifically about quitting smoking, but he has lots of practical tips about motivation, goal-setting, self-discipline, and so forth. There's probably something there that will help you to give up.
