What makes a link "quality"?

 

Backlinks are must. What you have to keep in mind however, is that links are more valuable if they come from quality sites, and if they include your keywords.

 

Backlinks rock. Along with unique well-written content (i.e. content that can pass Google) it's all you need to start building up presence.

 

I see they still work, but need to use new methods and in combination with social networking gives you the best results. I'm always looking for link exchanges if you are interested.

As everyone said... Links still work, however, Google is now ranking your site based on more than just how many links you have. They are looking at a variety of stats on your site to gauge the user-experience as a whole. How long are people staying on your page/site? Are they clicking through internal links, interacting with the site? Things that can be monitored to track user-experience will be, and for the most part already are. It still doesn't hold as much weight yet, but little by little this is where the new SEO game will be leaning toward. It's no longer going to be about who can slap on the most relevant words, and get the most links. It'll be about who can make the most user-engaging website.

I think that backlinks will always matter, you just have to add the social aspect into the equation now. I figure that they will add more weight to this as time goes on so effectively decreasing backlink benefits, but only due to the dilution of them adding the social aspect to the game.
