Is expired domains a good traffic source?

    Hi,
I'm trying to generate traffic to go to affiliate landing pages for image uploading software. Do you think that expired domains will be able to convert well for that?

What do you think will be able to convert the best?

    Thanks.

In general expired domains provide really bad traffic for two reasons
    a) The best ones, which have been getting huge traffic don't expire. Owners renew them
    b) You need to get a highly targetted domain which expires, which relates to your niche. These are normally like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

However if you manage to find a expiring domain close to your niche, you may have some success.

    Hope this helps

    Hi,
Yes, expired domains can be beneficial. They already have backlinks and have been indexed.
The domain name must be relevant to your targeted keywords of course, but I am guessing that you already knew that :)

Hope it works out for you.

    Thanks guys.
Hmm, it's so cheap, minus well try and see how well it converts... But I'm not holding hopes high...

What kind of traffic would you expect to convert the best for an affiliate image uploading landing page? I think PPC, but I need to all options before I start paying $.03-.05 a click.

Try small search engines, you get cheap ads, even ads in related forums is good

it depends upon the domain popularity, back links associated with domain and any targeted keyword in domain.

If the expired domain has a high PR, good quality backlinks and has established it's reputation, then it is possible.

i dont think it'll make much difference (except the age of domain) in traffic generation
bcoz you can generate traffic to a brand new site with some basic steps such as article marketing, bookamrking, video marketing
Buying an expired domain is not necessary. only do it if it has high pr(>=3) & has your main kw in it

It maybe useful but it still depends on the rank of the domain.

If you are trying to get traffic that converts to sales then like others said before, it will be very hard to locate tightly focused domains that will convert for you.

I think a better option in this case is to find websites in google that have the targeted traffic that fits your site and then offer to buy their sites.

If you are going to buy an expired domain then make sure that the domain was not banned by Google previously. There are couple of other important issues you need to know about buying an expired domain so use Google to know more about them.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Actually, I should have been more specific. I actually was planning on purchasing traffic from a website that has already done the grueling work of buying expired domains relevant to each niche. Seems to be working out pretty well thus far, but nothing definitively well.

It depends if the expired domains had a nice amount of traffic and/or PR, that way some of the work is already done for you

like everyone has suggested, it all depends on the domain and your product. If is a good fit than go for it:>

It can be good or bad. If the expire domain contain the keyword related to your landing page, then it is good, else forget about it due to low conversion

Most would agree that the traffic is weak at best and a waste of money. Yes, it is cheap, so if you want to "test" it out feel free. Just don't expect much from it. Also, I would stay away from adsense sites with this. No sense risking a ban...cause you never really know where these providers are sending traffic from.

This can be good, depends on if its close to your niche, how well its ranked etc. Test it out, refine it, if it didn't work out, you've learnt something from it!

It depends on 2 main things:
    1. The page rank of the domain
    2. The relevancy of the domain
If the page rank is low you might as well choose your own domain and build the page rank yourself. If you are looking at selling baby accessories for example, you hardly want to buy a porn domain.

I buy them when I see something I like. Most are garbage, some are pretty good.

Make sure you check into the traffic source. If you're looking at the traffic estimate from the GoDaddy auction page, double and triple check it. Use compete.com (or similar service) to get a better idea of the actual traffic. Use the WayBackMachine to see what type of website was there before. If it was a spammy site, you'll want to stay away.

The SE's MAY cut the site when it changes ownership. It's happened to me. BUT, some of the sites return to their previous ranks and regain the traffic.
