You know Google determines what your site is about not just from the link text of back links, but the title and content on the pages the back links are made from. How is a profile link a relevant, quality link? It isn't, although Google likes to see all sorts of links, built naturally, and gradually. I would use a profile link, only if I thought it would generate traffic, like on my HubPages profile page.

Yeah, that's right. Profile links are still valueable. It would be more valueable if your messages are also containing value.

You can get forum profile links but they do not have much value now, i think you should go for quality content links.

Signature links from forums like this one was important. But after 3 years of posting here, that 1,914 posts I've made have shown up in Google's Webmaster tools as 38. As the forums "archives" these posts or what ever they do, the links and posts are removed.

I know in general more unique content is better but in this instance I would think that a normal person with no thought about SEO just wanting to sign up and post on forums related to their site would in fact have very similar if not identical profile. To me if a person's bio, hobbies, and interests, and signature changed from site to site would be unnatural and raise a red flag.

I am not saying that Google wouldn't do as you say but it would seem if they did they would actually be rewarding the people posting for backlinks and being clever while punishing the clueless people who are doing the natural thing that Google should prefer.

I've had little to no success with forum profile links, at best they've done nothing at worst they've worsened my rankings.
