i like Adobe Dreamweaver ,is a commercial application for web development that’s available for the Mac and Windows operating systems. Its featured-packed suite of tools and options include: syntax highlighting and very smart Code Hinting, a built-in FTP client, project management and workflow options that make team work effortless, and Live View – which shows you a preview of your source code. Dreamweaver tightly integrates with other popular Adobe products such as Photoshop, allowing you to share Smart Objects for quick and easy updating and editing of graphics components.

ok you said the FIVE BEST WEB "DESIGN" TOOLS?

    dreamweaver is horrible.

firebug is only necessary if you have not mastered html / css. It literally is training wheels. You would only use it in a case of "oh no something broke and I don't know why".

Panic Coda is only good if you only use a MAC, otherwise you design for PC, since most web users USE PC, and if you ignore a majority of the web, you're not a good businessman. Simply check safari and you're done.

photoshop it is not the best actually. But sure, you need some photo manipulation tool. If you're using photoshop to slice a website [a juvenile practice] fireworks is hands down much better at it, and is actually designed for it. I have no idea what I could not do in GIMP, that I could do in photoshop. [and it's free and downloadable, so if I went to a new company, I could just download it to my workstation and be in business within minutes, without carrying a purse of cd's around ]

fireworks is ok, not THE best, and yes there is freeware that does the same thing. Or, maybe you're an adobe rep and you're trying to market adobe products on the down low?

Oh, I see, just a casual googling on teh web shows you completely stole your list from http://sixrevisions.com/web_design/top-five-web-design-tools/

    Agree.
Then you don't know Firebug. It's an essential tool used throughout our company. I do not know any developer that does not use it extensively.
Except for mobile where Microsoft products are almost non-existent. Panic Coda creates output for the web. The fact that it works on a Mac is irrelevent.
    Agree.
Typical DP post. Nothing original here.

Since you use it on 10 systems in you company would you be so kind as to lecture us why would we need Firebug for HTML/CSS ? Because unless you're coding LiveScript i don't see any use for it .

Why don't you know this? As a paying member of this board, I would think you'd be far more knowledgeable that I'd have to lecture you on this. After all, there is a new thing out called Google and Firebug has their own web site. But I guess you've never heard of Google since you call JavaScript "LiveScript". You must be that far behind the times.

You only picked up on my "10 systems" because I said we have FF on 10 systems but, no, we don't have 10 people sitting at them and using them all at once. Typical projects are three to five developers and all of them are freelancers I use on a regular basis.

Note that, while you see no use for Firebug, Chrome, Opera, and even IE have their own similar version. Most videos about developing for the web use Firebug or the others to debug their examples. Google for Paul Irish from Google for the in-house videos they use at Google which also shows that devs at Google, far above your pay grade, use Firebug and their equivalent dev tools. Ian Hickson, the author of HTML5 and many other documents, also uses Firebug. But you see no use for it.

With this tool, you can edit HTML, CSS, Javacript on the fly to test or debug your code. You can also view HTTP headers and network traffic for correct data transfer and response codes. You can view timing of downloads and uploads, outline elements, and save changes that you can then transfer to your server.

Why am I wasting my time with this? Go to the home page and read for yourself.
