Make some good videos with targetted keywords in your title, people will come to watch. If the video is good. You probably won't have much trouble with it. Just use good taglines.
An excellent title, good keywords and good tags are all important. However if you can purchase some initial views for it, do that. I have always found this just gives the video the jumpstart it needs.
Getting some paid viewers is just for starters. When people see high number of views, it always lures them into watching it themselves.
To work your way up there, i suggest sharing your channel with your friends, or posting a link to it on facebook.
Everyone gave some good advice so instead of repeating what they said, I'll give you my 2 cents. If you've never heard of it, related videos or video responses can be linked with popular videos. So a good idea that's used often is to create a related video and link it to a popular one in order to siphon off or allow some of the traffic from that video to carry over to yours.
make sure you give it a good title with the sort of keywords people will put in the search box?..you should know How-To videos are good as long as people are searching for that information..
A good way to promote your video is to create a YouTube group for people that are passionate about your topic. You could then manually search for people in your niche who've created similar videos & invite them to your group. Or promote your group in forums or email the YouTube group URL to your list (if you've got one). Ask them to rate & comment on your video. You can then start a discussion in your group - get it to be an active participating community that starts growing for you. Depending on what your video is, you could do a series of follow up videos. Perhaps you can do a demonstration or Q&A related to the first video.
If you want to make it popular, make the title attractive and eye catching, you can promote it through social bookmarking such as digg/stumbleupon other social bookmarking websites, this will increase the popularity of your video.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. I personally don't support it but it is admittedly effective. Go on any major SEO site and pay for youtube traffic/commenting services. For a small fee, you can have someone give you tens of thousands of unique views, which builds hype and gets your higher on their search engine. Comments does the same thing. Do this at your own risk.
