How to tell Google a site is now at a new domain

Discussion in 'Google' started by BlueLogic, Aug 26, 2011.

    Hi All,

I have to move an existing site to a new domain name and I'm wondering what the best way to do this is? I get about 55,000 visitors a month to the site and I have another domain ready to use but want to know the best way to tell Google that the site is at a new domain. Also, how long it would take for the change to take effect before all traffic will be redirected and Search Engine results updated?

    Thanks in advance.
    Jon

Use webmaster tools. The following might help: google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=83106

    Hi BlueLogic,

If you want to tell Google that you are moving your site to a new domain without risking to lose your monthly visitors do a redirect.

The best way to do it is a 301 redirect, which means moved permanently, you keep your page ranking and you don't lose any of your traffic.

You just set it up (Look for the code, just Google it) and let the search engines finish the job.

    Good luck,

If you are just moving the same site to a newer domain or moving a single page then your best option would be to do a simple 301 re-direct. This saves any links you might have on that page and preserves them.
