This is a bit of a rant, but here goes. I stopped using DP for a while because of this, and I come back and it's still the same. What is with so many people so desperate to run up their post count that they make absolutely POINTLESS replies which have already been concluded?! Take this thread for example: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=2246651 It's someone asking about adsense revenue sharing here.  First reply is that they stopped it years ago.  Yet there's 12 replies? Yeah, 11 people made absolutely pointless posts.  A couple of them were semi-informative, ok.  But what about the last reply there? "no man ur late its all over" -- YES WE KNOW. Urgh.  Is anyone with me here? I can't be the only one who gets annoyed by these fools. /rant
Yes, that's common on DP nowadays. I even complained that to a Moderator but still no action taken from Admins!
Ok, so I'm not just insane. Â I don't get it, because I've had one or two infractions in the past based on 'post has no content / running up post count' for saying things like "Thanks dude".. which I think is unfair but ok, I accept that it isn't a 'useful' post (I just like to be courteous). But then these guys who just repeat nonsense replies to a simple question that's already been answered get away with it? Personally I think those posts are a lot less valuable than a thank you post, or even a spam post for viagra. Â So annoying. I can understand replying with the same thing but elaborating on the reasons or something, but if you're not saying anything new why the hell bother? Why do people want to run up a good post count? Do they think that having 2,000 spam posts is impressive?!
maybe because some people consider their answer more intelligent than others... but in fact it's only they who feel this way, I don't know...
May be they are spammers. But we can always use Report post button on first post and write details about all posts. No need to report each post.
Most of them ARE spammers. Like you said, they're trying to up their post count. It comes with the territory I suppose. It must kind of be difficult for the Moderators to distinguish between a spammer post and a simple answer post. It can be confusing!
because of SPAM from certain people, mods need to be more strict and this site needs to get quality feedback, we need to be able to neg rep people!
335,351 infractions have been given out to 111,783 different users... the Report Post option actually does work (and as Digital_shubhi said, you don't need to report them all.. one will suffice with a note to look at others in the thread). In the long run (talking years), hopefully the useless posts go down as more and more people realize there is no value (perceived or otherwise) since any links they post are nofollow and their signature isn't seen by anyone other than registered members (guests/search engines/etc. don't see it).
errr you CAN neg rep people This should hopefully shut people up, the ones that keep talking trash about me trying to get super high post count.
When ever I read replies in any post, i guess many of those who reply are newbies do not have much idea about what is going on here what actually the question here they just wrote what they want to or what they have in mind before log in here. That is why we do not receive the solution of our problem or answer of the question we ask.
It irritates me when people post the same old stuff on every thread, too. Â I wish the moderators would clean up the members list and weed out those who just post crap and one sentence replies. Â What pisses me off even more though is the people who not only post useless stuff but provide nothing to backup their claims.
Working on it... there are about 50,000 banned users (a good portion of those are simply for posting useless crap).
Here's the deal,a lot of people(including me)don't bother to read all the posts on a thread.Rather they read the headline only.So they might post a response that it almost exactly the same as a post that was posted earlier. In short people sometimes come up with the same conclusions.
It's good to see that you're more than aware Shaun, (how could you not be?) and are looking for ways to do something about it. Â As Spoiltdiva said, it can happen sometimes from not reading all posts if it's a long thread, but when it's got like 5 replies, that's not hard to read, and generally before replying to a post, surely you should see if it's been answered already? I'm not so self-involved that I feel that my amazing answer can't possibly have already been offered, so unless a thread is 10 pages long, generally I only bother giving the/my answer if it hasn't already been said, atleast not unless I feel it needs explaining more. Â Pointless 'yer itz over man' replies when someone has already given a detailed answer with the same conclusion, is just irritating and pathetic. Also, the link does still work
What you don't seem to understand (at least I didn't read it here) is that this spam has gone to an industrial level. Think of outsourced call centers in India and now picture in your mind hundreds of workers in so called "seo companies" run by managers and rich bosses. You get the picture now? It's not the work of spammers in their bedroom promoting their own site. No, it's educated indians, working for a company, with clear missions (not the same for everyone of course) everyday working 10 hours per day 6 or 7 days a week. If you have a website with a contact form you know you receive plenty of small messages about increasing your traffic, about seo companies, etc. That's the marketing department job. Once they get customers (from western countries mostly of course) then they can provide massive amounts of backlinks and forum signatures, in several niches, why? Because in the meantime, those thousands workers have been creating profiles on thousands of forums, simply responding to lots of threads with one liners, or more, not necessarily copied and pasted content, and not necessarily noticable or bannable by moderators. And creating new threads with easy questions, like "Hi friends, what's the difference between SEO and PPC? Which one is best for my site? Thank you for sharing.." and then those are filled with answers from legitimate members of the forum (wasting their time) and other "workers". They don't care that the forum signatures are nofollow or even invisible to search engines. Of course that's an added bonus, but everything is classified in excel spreadsheets and assigned to teams, so they can sell dofollow visible forum backlinks in this and that niche if that's what the customer requiere, but most often the customer will go with targeted traffic only, and that's what they can provide as soon as they activate the signature links from "dormants" accounts with hundreds of messages on the relevant forums for this customer. All this is of course organised by software and usual business organisation to make it possible. In India they have the resources at all levels (workers, education, software, money, business skills, english language, foreign consultant, etc.) for that. So of course don't think in western terms with the 5 people working in a seo company and hardly making ends after paying wages, taxes, cost of customer relationship, etc. That's totally another level. OK I don't want to spend more time on this, but I think I gave you the idea in your mind, then you can imagine the rest, it's industrial forum spam, done in clever ways with low paid human force instead of bots. Of course it's hurting forums all over, because the legitimate members when they realize they've been fooled, or that the amount of crap new members and postings is such, they'll refrain from participating (with quality) in the forum be it answering questions or asking them.. On DP at least the mass of members is such that it is still a good resource to find help, make business and establish relationships, but what about the smaller forums? More difficult.
I have 2 variations 1 Post count 2 Stupidity 3 A mix of both Hope Shawn here will soon take the decision to ban certain countries so this foeum will re become a wonderfull place to be not full of "experts"
I've seen this so many times. Almost every thread here on DP has duplicate answers. As SpoiltDiva said, there are a lot of people just reading the headline of a thread and then posts an answers instantly. Thats why this forum gets so many unrelated answers as well because people don't actually read everything the OP wrote. And if they're so lazy that they can't even read what the OP said then they are probably not going to check if someone has already answered the OP's question. And of course there's people who just want to get a higher post count..
@Project Mobius Where have you been? I've actually missed you.(for real) I do so enjoy beating up on you.[o] Honestly you do keep things interesting around here.I used to think that you were useless but you do perform a function.....entertainment.
