Concentrate on the quality of articles. Write high quakity, unique, error free and easy to ready articles. Then do proper on page optimization like proper meta information, h1,h2,h3, proper keyword density (2 to 5%). Then start off page optimization like forum posting, blog commenting, article submission, PR submission, etc. You will get the success by doing those.
Make a good onpage then start collecting backlinks. Without search engine ranking you can't have good traffic.

Try to create One way backlinks rather than too many reciprocal link exchanges, also try to link your blog from high page rank websites..You can also try Guest posting also..
with all techniques make sure you website has a proper sitemap which has been submitted to webmaster tools and make sure you check crawl errors on daily basis n there is not even single one ... check w3c validation as well .. concentrate on researched base content and keep on working with rest of the seo techniquesÂ
