I think that blog commenting is a solid way to earn traffic and backlinks. Fact is that it takes time, and if done manually can get tiring. But in the end, thoughtful responses that actually HAVE TO DO with the blog post are not marked as spam or deleted by the blog owner. If anything they are replied to, and if you throw in an a couple links, it wont matter because your response was relevant. I have seen results from blog commenting, so its definitely a powerful tool, not just for traffic but for search engine rankings as well.

It's important to make sure that you`re commenting on high traffic blogs with related content and detailed thoughts or helpful tips. If your comment is good, people will check out your blog.

If you are able to get your comment posted on a well known blog (like "The 4 Hour Work Week") and get the author to engage you in a (positive) conversation you will get some good PR. And if the blog gets a ton of traffic you could land some uniques and a guest post or two on some other blogs. It's tough to pull off since those folks are bombarded with comments and spammers.

Works, but it's really time consuming. Tools like scrapebox usually help.
