I've submitted my sites to a few high PR directories and the results haven't been very good... are directories useless in terms of search engines?
Who tell you this. Directories are always being a part of link building. directories is helpful and easy way to get back-link.

I think that submitting to hundreds of directories is not really a good use of time anymore. You need to focus on those relevant, high PR and quality directory websites.
This is considered by me useless, too much time involved to submit to 1000 directories. All this time i could do research, write some good articles and though time get more benefits.
I think if they are done in a proper way then they are really useful.. Only go for a good directories as there are many available so choose the only quality ones and they will be good..
are you sure that you are approved from all of those directories? and a few can't give you good result dude. you have to do submission in a lot of directories.
