The first link Priority states that when a page links more than once to the same target url. In short, if the search engine spider crawls a page on your website and comes across two links pointing to the same page, the first link is consider the anchor text. The second link will be disregarded. This is Google's way of making the webmasters don't put lots of anchor text links into the content of their website.

There are theories out there about this and several SEO companies have done tests to try and prove and disprove this (including testing different anchor text for links pointing to the same page), but the truth is nothing has ever been definitely proven that secondary links to the same page are disregarded.

This post summarizes the results of a recent internal test conducted to understand how a website’s navigation menu affects the ‘First Link Priority’ rule. A method for avoiding the consequences of this rule was also tested with positive results. While these tests were in no way exhaustive, they do add to the body of evidence available on the subject.
