I use a addon for my web browser called SeoQuake, it allows me to see the age, backlinks, Alexa rank, etc...on any webpage I visit.
Yahoos site explorer is pretty good. If you do the link:www.yourdomain.com it will give a small sample. Webmaster tools from Google will give you a more elaborate list.
Simply enter google home page search the keyword back link checker tool and you got an large amount of back link checker tools,like as backlink watch.
The Yahoo Site Explorer is a nice way to check your backlinks, shows you a lot more links that Google link anchor, unless you are using Google Webmaster Tools

Install SeoQuake in your Mozilla Firefox browser. This Add-on will show you the number of backlinks according Google and Yahoo.
I had also used backlink-tracker.net, but this one show more backlinks against backlinkwatch.com for me in couple of sites. Do you have any idea why it happens so.
