Yeah I agree, writing an eBook and giving it to your forums members is a great idea, although, if you want to make some money from your forum you could also bring in a VIP section or member section for your forum. A one time payment, which will give those members extra sections or features, you could give those VIP/Members the eBook as a gift for becoming VIP or members.
well, as a member the best gift I would really appreciate is a recommendation about the services/products we are offering.
Things I've given in the past include: special forum privileges, raffle tickets, gift cards, and free promotional space.
You can offer e-vouchers to your members. e-vouchers is easier to obtain and you have less worry on courier postage.

There is a nifty plugin for vBulletin called "Karma" that rewards users with points for various activities, including posting, adding reputation comments, "thanking" posts, levels of activity, etc. We've just begun allowing users to trade karma points for premium subscriptions, services, and cash.
Give them some credit, and you might consider to set up a store section which offering some goods like voucher, som product. The member can exchange those goods with the credit they gain
I have seen many of the new forums (fledgling, of course!) give away money for being active and posting unique contents. However, for an established forum, offering discounts, gift vouchers etc is okay to keep the morale up of the active members.
Speaking for myself, I would love to receive something physical rather than digital. But shipping costs these days are pretty high, so in that case, my favorite gift would be a gift card from various online stores. If you look into it, you might even find discounts when buying gift cards in bulk.
I might agree on the shipping cost is high and therefore it will be good to find some small or light product, the shipping cost will be cheaper. GPS, mini laptop, android table PC are not too heavy

I feel cash prizes by PayPal are the best. You can organize contests / giveaways every month and keep your forum members happy.
Give those active user have the priority to enter certain thread which only VIP members able to enter and post in it. Provide them a benefit of sticky post. Give them some Google Ads or Facebook Ads vouchers. Provide some discount of placing banner at your forum. You also able to do some contest to collect points and claim for some giveaway such as iPad 2.
Discount, coupon, ebook, and gift card <---- totally agree on this one. you can try making deals with actual sellers and trade their products (which you can use as rewards for your members) for ads on your forum
You could give them an Amazon gift voucher, or a Paypal payment of say $5, even better you could have a competition for the best poster to receive these gifts
