Get relevant back links to your site to boost your ranking and to get good traffic.
Write good metatags to your articles .

SEO has a quite long learning curve, It takes sometime before you get the hang of it. I would suggest doing simple high quality backlink methods, Web 2.0 profiles or articles are good and not considered as spam as much as blog comments and forum profiles.

Then I suggest you do some social bookmarking using some free automation tools, a little bit of twitter,facebook and social network posting. Trust me, social signals have changed SEO quite a lot, I've ranked some sites using only social bookmarks and twitter+facebook posting with little effort ever since the panda update, and they're still there holding their positions.

Also not to forget On-page SEO, I suggest you insert the keyword(s) you want to rank for in your title but do not spam it, get unique content that passes copyscape, there are some free duplicate content checkers too, just use google. Maybe you should even get a 2.5-5% keyword density for the keyword you want to rank for.

Also I suggest you try using a free host or a blogspot blog and try to rank for a few keywords even if they don't bring in profit, just to get the hang of it and not waste any valuable money on the beginning of learning SEO.
