You can add as many as you want, but the more you add / populate it's going to be decrease the effect. So say for example you target one keyword: "play a game online" and you optimize the whole site for this keyword, there's a higher chance you'll rank for this keyword. Where as if you populate the keywords and try to aim for 20 keywords, you will probably not rank very high for all of them.

I max at 2-3 per page; and I focus on the primary keyword and add LSI terms to flesh out the page...

If you have a new site, go for 4-5 keywords at first and then gradually increase the keywords as per the performance of the previous keywords.

    Dear seoakram,

You can select keyword for your website according to your need, But basically there is only 3-4 keyword is selected for a page is the right way. I mean to say if your website have 3 pages it means you can select 9-12 keywords or as per your requirement, if you select a more keyword for your website then you have to work harder than less keyword.

    Thanks,
    Sagir Khan

In the beginning 3,4 keywords are suitable, after some times as your site grow you can add more keywords.
    Thanks

It depends on the number of pages on your website. You can increase the keywords according to the pages.

it depends on the specific market you are targetting. if your product is very common, then you have to target multiple keywords to get good SERPs. however, if your product is niche, then 2-3 targetted keywords would be enough. try out good keyword research tools to find out which keyword is being searched more often.

It depend on the quality and nature of your site. If you have a site with tons of articles, then your targeted keyword list be very large. On the other hand if you create a micro niche side then you should use couple of targeted keywords.

There is no set limit of number of target keywords on a website... You can target as many a you want.

I would suggest you to use variations of your keywords, target long tail and LSI along with short tail keywords.

This increases the chances of your website for top listings for all types of user's queries.

It depends upon your website. You may have many keywords to target if your website has a broad theme.

Target your most important and/or competitive keyword on your home page - and probably a few variations on it (for example, web designer, website designer, web design, website design); then target a different keyword on each of your other important pages - for example, attractive website design on one page and affordable website design on another page.

Obviously tackle keywords you stand a chance of competing for - maybe website design + county/state.

Well as many as you can handle. It is advisable to start with 1 keyword if you have just started the site or have very tough competition.

I'm thinking 3 - 4 max. And like akasheg said, start out with 1 keyword first.
