Does Google affect the ranking when you non www redirect to your website as i have observed many sites who have done this.

I think you should do an 301 redirection.I prefer www version, but I do not know the seo effect.Even google.com is redirected www.google.com .My non www version is 301 redirected to www version.

www is a sub-domain and left unchanged or your not a HUGE website can count as duplicate content.. I think. Myself, I have a tech support job for a major inet provider and let me tell you that lots of ppl still do the www when entering a website into the address bar. They think that a website will not work without it. Personally it is a sub-domain and should not be used and a redirect is very needed. I think that as long as you 301 redirect from the www. to the non www version of the webpage you are safe with google seo listings. Just make sure you doing it for all the urls instead of just the top level of the domain.

Yes google affects the ranking. Google treats non www and www links differently if you don't do 301 re-direction. Now if you wanna redirect you site then there are some techniques to do that. Visit here to learn the process http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php

301 Redirection of non www url to www url of the website doesn't affect the ranking in Google. But too many redirection for a site is not advisable. Probably it might affect your ranking.

Well I don't think that its going to affect your rankings because indeed it is the same site and Google is smart enough.
