I have a similar situation. I also rank well for my keywords on MSN and have for a while now yet I get very little traffic from them.

I was number 1 at MSN search with the most important keywords related to my portal (that is no longer available:( ) and below, below, below top 1000 at Google and Yahoo results .

Regardless of this, I got literally hundred's of times more visits form Google using worse and less frequent words than form MSN using the best keywords.

Summary: I guess few people uses MSN as search engine. I wished to be as good positioned at Google as I was at MSN:eek:

P.S. My portal was built using IIS + SQL SERVER + ASP.NET, everything MS technologies. Coincidence...?

Ummm... No. MSN search can very well be a very good source of traffic. I consistently get a good deal of traffic from MSN at one site, at least in the hundreds a day.

I still get a lot more traffic from Google (3~6x as much as MSN), but that doesn't make MSN worthless.

Checking the number of referrers, I have tens of thousands. Google is still #1 at the moment though.

However, MSN traffic does seem to follow a different pattern than Google. If you can latch onto a few good SERPs there, it can be very worthwhile. I have 1 key phrase that sends a ton of traffic and pretty much dwarfs other traffic from MSN.

    Unfortunatly,
an anti-trust lawsuit stopped them from forcing any search engine on people.

Sure, but nobody prevents MS from making MSN/Live the default search engine and, as opposite as in Firefox, they will likely not install by default their competitors' search boxes :(

So, the users must install the third party search boxes.

ranked top 5 in MSN for most of my keywords and I get almost no traffic..I am on the second page on Yahoo and Google for the same keywords and get decent traffic.

I think I saw some numbers on the news recently that said MSN has about 18% of the search market.....I've been doing SEO for more than a year and I want to know WHAT 18%

I think I'm gonna do some deep digging to see if anyone is using MSN these days.

yep...i too don't get much traffic from msn, i get mostly from google.

But as far as i know its easy to get traffic from msn for new sites, so if your site is new, you can easily get traffic from msn....getting traffic from google is a bit tough for new sites!

Ditto. Although Yahoo is almost the same as MSN. Both are still waaaaay behind google anyway.

I agree with the concensus. Google is king. Hard to get the best placement but well worth the effort in terms of sheer numbers.
