It's not totally depend on back links, it also depend on-page & content optimization in your website. Update content weekly only once & try to get quality back links as much as possible
i am running a career news website about jobs,education and exams with a wordpress blog.I do content optimization with keywords and getting around 1200 visitors per day,but my page rank is zero.So i need to improve that one.
If your Present PR is 0, then go for the 100 backlinks from PR 1 site or 50 Backlinks from PR-2 sites. If you can earn backlinks from the Higher PR sites then the number links will be decreased.

I think nobody can't let you know exactly no. of backlinks to get PR 1. It depend on many factors like quality & no. of backlinks, site content, internal linking etc. Perform ethical seo activities you'll get RR 1 soon.
No one can tell the specific number but just continue what you're doing, continue to acquire quality backlinks and get more traffic and see your site to the top soon.
Just focus on getting quality contextual back links. Remember that having high PR does not mean traffic. I have seen PR on a website of 6 with almost not traffic.
do you really want to create the links of set numbers. Why not go out and work hard to gain as maximum number of backlinks as you can. It would certainly going to help you out in future.
I am not sure why do you guys focus so much on PR while talking about quality backlinks. A backlink with PR 0 could still be quality backlink so it is not always necessary to go after high PR websites only.
Hi, in any way backlinks is not related with pagerank,pagerank is nothing but google ranking for quality and importance of the content and backlinks are offpage promotion.
