Lets say you could control how sites link to you. Which is better for you overall - all links point to your homepage or deep links directly to the content you want people to visit? And what if deep links vastly outnumbered homepage links, is that sub-optimal over having a more even ratio?
It depends upon your keyword, if you keyword is generic in nature then its better create a back link that points to the home page. which usually comprises of all the information which is briefly described. or if your keyword is more specific then its better to point the link directly to specified content page. where the information regarding only then particular content would be available.
Definitely deeper pages. Link to more specific pages within your site with optimised anchor text, but also make sure to include an internal link from within that content back to your home page. Drive PR to supporting pages, and then sculpt it up to your homepage. That way you cover both bases.
