If the keywords of category names is very popular, i suggest you could add the category names in your URL, or else, you could don't get the three steps URL.

but if your secondary folders have four words, and your folders that hang off that have four or five, will you be penalized?

For instance, in joomla with seo function turned on, it just takes the title words and makes a url, But the title is most likely going to be written for humans, so you need to remove or ad words so only the main keywords (that are different from the words in the rest of the url, remain.

I get that long urls will have diminishing effect, but not none. And major newpapers online seem to just allow the title to convert to the url, so I cant see that it would massively hurt to have four in each sub folder on your site: such as:

yoursite. com/ key1-key2-key3/ key4-key5-key6-key7

I read that humans may not like to click on this, but you will find that in google serps they abbreviate the link anyway, so unless you are looking at the bottom of the screen for the full extension, so what?

its not exactly keyword stuffing when you just abbreviate the article keys (key4 onwards) to include unique but keywords related directly to what is in the article.
