domain name question

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by quatto, May 19, 2011.

if you have a few different keywords in the domain name does it matter what order they are in as long as the words are in the name?

    For example "jobsforunemployedgraduates"

will it rank well for "jobs for graduates"?

or "kindlefantasybookreviews" will it rank well for "kindle reviews" "kindle book reviews" etc?

You will most likely not rank solely based on keywords in the domain. You can rank for keywords that are not contained in your domain name. Having keywords in your domain name helps, but I would not be too consumed with it. It is more important to create quality unique content and optimize those pages for the keywords you want to target.

In addition, Google has been hinting recently about decreasing the importance of keywords in the domain name when it comes to ranking, so they could become less important in the future.

It's all concern by competition level ,if you find the keyword in low competition and low search result ,im sure you can rank well for your keyword .

It helps to have the keywords in the domain name. But like wallie1233 said, find the right niche and your domain will rank well with little seo optimization to be done. Also get dot coms only and avoid all others. Dot coms have more value in the eyes of search engines.

Keywords in your domain may not give you the ranking you are looking for. Content is what you should concentrate on and optimize the keywords therein.

yes keywords in your domain name are vital for an edge. regardless of what other tell you, have a look at any highly competitive area and just put two keywords into the search and you will find google highlights them in both the title and the description. It doesnt do this for fun, it uses it in the algorithm, that is why market samurai also uses this as a measure of competitiveness. You may also look at my signature which as the keywords in the urls' and ranks on page one for the main keywords. While not vital for ranking, if you want maximum boost, use the exact phrase match as your url, with or without hyphens.

Yes if you are the US govt or wikipedia you dont need to worry about these trifling things, but for the rest of us it makes our life a little easier.

Google always ranks the first word as the most important in weighting, whether its the title, url, description or on page text.

If you want to rank for a specific keyword string that you have exact match volumes for, then use that exact same string as your url, if you can. Chances are you cant, but you can modify it with hyphens or adding one word at the end. People like shorter urls and if an exact one is available with high volumes that you can contest then go for it. Chances are that while 'kindle reviews' will have higher volumes than 'kindle book reviews', the lower the keyword url the more likely it is taken.

also it helps if you can register your business name the same as the url. you may want to check both at the same time.

dot coms have exactly the same weighting factor as any other extension, its just that people remember dot coms easier. If you are US based you will probably want a dot com and to have it hosted in the US - that will make a difference.

Well definitely order matters.Put your primary keywords near to the starting point of your URL. Search engines think that words at the left hand side of the URL are the most important keywords.Keep only keywords in URL. And remove all numbers and words such as “the”, “of”, “in”, “your” and etc. If we keep those redundant words in the URl, it will dilute your keyword density in the URL and possibly make our URL exceed the length of 10 words. For example instead of using "jobsforunemployedgraduates" you may consider "unemployedgraduatesjobs" or "jobs-unemployed-graduates".You can use hyphen too but avoid using too many hyphens, try to restrict 2-3 hyphens.

Nope, dot coms are more valuable that dot tk or do eu. Just any word in the search engine and dot coms will dominate the front page. Just try to rank a for a domain like refinanceyourhome.tk, good luck with that buddy!

Its good to have your keywords in your domain name, title, meta keywords and description etc.
You will surely get some benefit depending on the competition for the same keyword/key phrase

Now a days having keywords in your domain name doesn't help much...Quality backlinks with anchor text containing the keywords are important in search ranking
