You will essentially pass the link juice from any existing links out there on the internet from the domain you are 301 redirecting to your current website. Provided your content is actually related, you will keep some-to-most of this link juice.

In most of the cases, Google will pass on PR and other kinds of backlink influence to the new URL.

Doing this will pass some weight and link juice to the new website, but it is preferable not to do a 301 redirect since your website is already a high PR.

Redirecting (301) your old domain has a very positive impact on the SERPs for the destination domain, but only for the search terms where domain A already ranked.

What does NOT get transferred however is the accumulated toolbar PR for that domain.

To make matters slightly more complex however, weight passing links to your old domains do pass SOME PR to the new domain. The total amount is somewhat diminished though.

The advantages of 301 redirect for your visitors.

By setting up a 301 redirect on the pages you permanently moved, you can easily give your visitors the better user-experience of your website. With a 301 redirect, you can be certain that your visitors will not access an obsolete version of your site, but will find all the last pieces of information they need on your pages.

The advantages of 301 redirect for Search Engine Optimization.

301 redirects are above all important from the point of view of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). As it is the only server code that indicates the permanent move of a page to a new address, it is also the only code that is completely understood by search engines when indexing a site. Using a good server configuration, and well designed 301 redirects when releasing a new version of your website is thus crucial for your presence on search engines, and your potential incoming traffic.

Quick Question, I have a guy that built links for me, I want to fire him. He says if I do, he will take all of his links with him and my site will plummet. Is there a way to tell if he has 301 redirected all of the links from his blank domain to mine? Basically, I need to know if he is bluffing or if I should can him and not worry about it. My site is CustomMilitaryDogTags.com. Thanks for your help everyone.

So are the links he built for you on his site, and is he saying that if you fire him he will remove all of his links, or is he currently redirecting all of the pages on his site to your site?

If you want to learn if a page is redirecting to your site, then go to a site that allows you to view the http headers, such as web-sniffer.net and type in the URL you want to check. If the status says 301 and then lists your page as the location then it is being 301 redirected and you are benefiting from it. If this is the case, he can turn off the 301 redirect when he wants which could affect you. How much it will affect you depends on the other backlinks you have and how much of a quality site his is.

If he has just built links for you on other sites, then him leaving will only affect you if these links disappear.

Thanks for the response Revium. So, I guess there is no tool out there where I could type in My domain and see if any links are 301 redirected to it?

I am not aware of any tool that would check to see if a destination URL has any 301 redirects pointing to it, but that does not mean a tool does not exist. You can search and see if something is out there.

Otherwise the only other option I know of would be to do a manual check. If you know which pages you are getting links to from this person, then you could go to some tool and get a list of the backlinks to that specific page and then enter in each individual backlink URL to a program that allows you to view the http headers (ie web-sniffer.net) to determine if any of them are 301 redirected or not.

For example if you had a page on your site that you knew was getting links such as example.com/page1.html you could go to Yahoo and enter in 'site:example.com/page1.html' and then click on the 'Inlinks' button and then choose 'Except from this domain' from the 'Show Inlinks' drop down box. This will give you a list of all URLs linking to your page, and you could individually test each of them with a program that lets you view the http headers to see if they are redirecting to your site or not.

Note: Yahoo has stated that they are no longer updating or maintaining their backlink tool, so it may not be the most up to date and you may need to use another tool to get a more current list of backlings to a page. Regardless of the tool you use, the process should be similar. I hope this helps.
